Lindy Hop/Swing Classes

Level 1: Classes get a mix of brand new dancers and continuing students. There are several different sessions at this level, each with new content, which can be taken in any order. Each session features a different theme. Students are recommended to stay at this level long enough both to cover many of the important elements of Lindy Hop as well as to feel very comfortable with what’s taught before moving to the next level. The aim is to work on developing a solid foundation of dance skills while building a repertoire of moves for social dancing. Discount after 2 full sessions. No experience required to join.

Monday Slot 2: The second class on Monday can vary as to what is offered. Often it is a Lindy Hop class focused on a topic. It can also be a specialty class, such as Shag, Charleston or a performance routine. These classes are aimed at experienced Lindy Hoppers with solid knowledge of 8 count basics. The experience level can vary, although they are often appropriate for intermediate to advanced.

It is not required to attend with a partner as classes will rotate. An exception may be a routine class.

Lindy Hop/Swing Classes
September–November 2019 Session
Sundays • Newton, MA October 20 to November 24, 2019 (6 Week Session)
Mondays • Boston, MA September 16 to October 21, 2019 (6 Week Session)
5:00–6:00pm Lindy Hop Level 1

Featured topic for this session: Styling!

During this session we’ll add some extra attention to Lindy Hop styling, including those fancy swivels you see follows do. Why does Lindy Hop look different than other kinds of Swing? It’s not just about WHAT you do, but also about HOW you do it.

6:00–6:30pm Stay after class for practice!
6:30–7:30pm Lindy Hop Level 1

Featured topic for this session: Mixing 6s, 8s & Other Rhythm Patterns!

Included this session, we’ll explore how to take a typically 8 count move and expand or contract into a different rhythm, how to mix varying rhythm patterns, plus taking the focus from the counts and putting it on flow and making smooth transitions. For brand new dancers and continuing students.

7:30–8:00pm Stay after class for practice!
8:00–9:00pm Dancing with Musicality & Flow

The music guides our dancing with structure, style, and hopefully inspiration. It helps transform just doing steps with “the way that you do it”. There are many aspects to connecting to the music, and this class will focus on mood, feel, and how we’re inspired. For intermediate to advanced Lindy Hoppers.

Classes with Tony & Aurelie Tye are offered in 6 week sessions throughout the year, although occasionally sessions are shorter. Hop to the Beat specializes in the Lindy Hop style of Swing as well as Charleston, St Louis and Collegiate Shag, Shim Sham, Big Apple and other related dances. Newton classes have been running since 1995, with the Boston location added in 2010. Classes have a fun, relaxed atmosphere, emphasizing lead/follow connection, rhythm, musicality, technique and styling. Each class consists of a 1 hour lesson per week for 6 weeks. It is possible to join a class in its second week. A partner is not required to attend and classes tend to have a mix of those who come solo, as a couple, or maybe with a group of friends. These are adult classes, although teens may also attend. All classes rotate partners, with the exception of maybe a routine class. Dancing with different partners in class is very helpful for learning, and also a fun way to meet classmates! Locations are easily accessible by car and public transportation.
