Lindy Hop/Swing Classes

Level 1: Classes get a mix of brand new dancers and continuing students. There are several different sessions at this level, each with new content, which can be taken in any order. Each session features a different theme. Students are recommended to stay at this level long enough both to cover many of the important elements of Lindy Hop as well as to feel very comfortable with what’s taught before moving to the next level. The aim is to work on developing a solid foundation of dance skills while building a repertoire of moves for social dancing. Discount after 2 full sessions. No experience required to join.

Monday Slot 2: The second class on Monday can vary as to what is offered. Often it is a Lindy Hop class focused on a topic. It can also be a specialty class, such as Shag, Charleston or a performance routine. These classes are aimed at experienced Lindy Hoppers with solid knowledge of 8 count basics. The experience level can vary, although they are often appropriate for intermediate to advanced.

It is not required to attend with a partner as classes will rotate. An exception may be a routine class.

8:00–9:00pm Lindy Hop Routine, Part 1

For this year’s routine we are back to our first love, Lindy Hop! It will include a mix of partner and some solo dancing. Within the routine there will likely be groups doing different bits, moving in out of formations.

Part 1 will be about learning the routine while focusing on rhythm and musicality. Doing choreography is fun, challenging, and a great way to work on your individual and social dance skills! Lead-follow partnering will be emphasized in class.

Part 2 will continue in the following session. The focus will be on performance, teamwork, formation and practice! We’ll be aiming to do our first performance in May.

This routine is aimed at Int/Adv to Adv level and partners are required for the class. You do not need to commit to doing the two sessions, or to performing, in order to attend the first session. There will be scheduled practice time after class, plus practicing outside of class is strongly encouraged! There may be performance opportunities added requiring rehearsals outside the usual class time.

Let us know if you would like to attend and need help finding a partner.

Classes with Tony & Aurelie Tye are offered in 6 week sessions throughout the year, although occasionally sessions are shorter. Hop to the Beat specializes in the Lindy Hop style of Swing as well as Charleston, St Louis and Collegiate Shag, Shim Sham, Big Apple and other related dances. Newton classes have been running since 1995, with the Boston location added in 2010. Classes have a fun, relaxed atmosphere, emphasizing lead/follow connection, rhythm, musicality, technique and styling. Each class consists of a 1 hour lesson per week for 6 weeks. It is possible to join a class in its second week. A partner is not required to attend and classes tend to have a mix of those who come solo, as a couple, or maybe with a group of friends. These are adult classes, although teens may also attend. All classes rotate partners, with the exception of maybe a routine class. Dancing with different partners in class is very helpful for learning, and also a fun way to meet classmates! Locations are easily accessible by car and public transportation.
